Travel story of Trip to Magic valley Kasol and Rasol Trek
« on: April 11, 2015, 05:23:51 AM »

It was not even a month since our last trip to Kasol in Parvati Valley, riding motorcycles but the magic of Kasol called us again and this time we visited Kasol on a Himachal Roadways Volvo and the highlight of the trip was a very exhaustive trek from Kasol to Rasol, a small village in Magic Valley.

Prologue

Ever since we came back from our  bike trip to Kasol, we fell in love with the place and just after returning from Parvati Valley we wanted to go back to the magical place in Himalayas.

(If you want to read about our previous trip to Kasol on Bike, then do read this travel blog:

Gotripperz's bike trip to Magic Valley Kasol in Parvati Valley in October '14 )

We started planning for the trip to Kasol again but this time we wanted to go comfortably, to spend some good time there, do some trekking as last time it was just riding and riding on Motorcycles from Gurgaon to Kasol. So, again we were four members, two new and two from the old Bikers gang from trip to Kasol.

To not waste time in traveling, we booked a Volvo to Manali but there is no Volvo that goes directly to Kasol and hence one needs to book a Volvo to Manali and then need to get down at Bhuntar and then take a local Bus or a taxi to Kasol. It is 2-3 hours journey there on from Bhuntar to Kasol, my recommendation is to take a local bus as many ply on Bhuntar Manikaran Sahib route. So, all the planning was done and bookings were done according to our month old knowledge about the magic valley.

Some of the teaser pics from this trip to Kasol.

Start of the Journey: As I mentioned earlier in my post that this time we wanted to do the journey in Volvo bus as we didn't want to get tired and also wanted to save time and energy to explore more in Kasol as I heard of many treks from Kasol like trek to Tosh, Rasol, Malana to completely see the beauty of Parvati Valley.

So, we booked a HRTC Volvo that is Himachal Roadways Volvo through Redbus.in app. The Himachal Roadways bus was till Manali and the scheduled departure time was 9:00 pm from Kashmere gate ISBT. Since I was coming from Gurgaon, I got stuck in traffic and then in between the traffic and with the fear of loosing the bus I took a Metro because it was a government bus and they wouldn't wait in any circumstance but my friends did a good job to hold the bus for 5-10 mins and I could reach there at ISBT at around 9:10 pm. I was running with a large size bag across the airport like lobby of ISBT and finally I caught the bus just in time. Everybody looked at me like I was some criminal when I got iside the bus but who cares :P . Finally the journey started they would again make you forcefully watch a pirated bollywood movie and there is usually not much to do inside the bus and we also wanted to relax to save our energy for trekking in Kasol and hence we decided to sleep just after a dinner break near Karnal. But the bus story doesn't end here, God had some different plans.
Just a seat ahead of us two lads were sitting they were the local property agents from Sonipat, I infact now know their full life story but did I ask them? ... NO, but still they kept on discussing all the crests and troughs of their lives loudly inside the bus all night. I didn't hate music so much all in my life the way I hated music that night. Along with their philosophical life discussions there was a continuous music all through the night from their Cell phone. When we got irritated we asked them to keep the volume low, what the person did he wore the headphones and those headphones were again amazing, now the volume was even louder than his mobile phone speaker. I got irritated to the core but if someone asks me if I want to give an award for the Bakchodest( Moronest)people on earth those two will get the award with a margin, sorry for the word, but they were like this only.

We knew that the road from Bilaspur to Sundernagar was very bad and speed of the bus got slow due to very bad road.

At around 7 am in the morning the bus stopped for a tea break and when we got out of the bus, it was freezing cold. Finally at around 11 am the bus reached Bhuntar where we needed to get Down.

Day 1: Now one need to take a taxi or a local bus from Bhuntar to kasol as Volvo takes a turn to Manali and thus we got down at Bhuntar and took a local bus. It was 2-3 hours journey from Bhuntar to Kasol and the Bus service is very good as many buses ply between Bhuntar to Manikaran Sahib, which is a popular Sikh Gurdwara and Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara is just 4-5 kms ahead of Kasol. The road condition was not very good again and at some places road is also very narrow.

Some pics on route to Kasol from Bhuntar

Two lads also got down with us in Bhuntar and they were also heading to Kasol and again took the same local bus and again Music was on with their usual philosophical Bakar. These are the two and only two pieces on this planet. The one in white is Mangal bhai and in blue with headphones on is the talented one.

Finally at around 2 pm we finally reached Kasol and the hunt for hotel was again on. when we went there last time not even a month ago, there was a huge rush there and we got room 2 kms ahead of the main Kasol but this time it was not that much crowded and we got our hotel at Rs 500 a room and we took two rooms of Hotel Raj Palace. Hotel Raj Palace in Kasol is also a sister concern of a famous cafe Little Italy in Kasol. So, if you expect that you will get a nice dinner in Hotel Raj Palace, you will be disappointed as I have stayed two times there, eating options are very disappointing in the Raj Palace hotel in Kasol, it is just for staying hotel.

After checking into our rooms, we slept and finally woke up at around 7 pm and the hunt for food started. If you love north Indian food then options are very less and there is one Namaste cafe, which has always been a saviour in Kasol in any season or even offseasons. So, if you need north Indian food then hunt for Namaste cafe in Kasol. After dinner we called it a day with few plans for next day and trekking. On that night itself we decided to go on a trek to Rasol from Kasol. Locals told us that it is an easy one compared to Tosh or Malana and ohh boy we took them too seriously that its an easy one. Next day would be a blunder for us but eventually we survived with some memories. We got the information that we first go to a small village called Chahal and then after Chahal with a little more trek we'll reach Rasol but that information was very wrong. One should do a proper planning if he/she decides for a Rasol trek and we learnt it the hard way next day.

Day 2

It was a nice bright day, we woke up with the excitement of going on a Hike to Rasol from Kasol. We got ready and prepared for trek with all the misinformation we had. Actually we didn't prepare at all. And we just had a good breakfast and started the trek without even carrying a water bottle and as the day will progress, we just survived at the end of a very harsh unprepared day.

Anybody going on any Hike or Trek just plan for it don't go unprepared as you will be exploring the unknown.

This article on Gotripperz should help you on basics of planning the Hike trip
Hiking and Backpacking Checklist and tips on how to plan for a hiking trip

Ok, back to my trip log, we just started our trek with lot of energy, Sun was not very harsh and for us it was a perfect day to do some nice easy trek to find the magic in the magic valley Rasol.

We just crossed the bridge and trekked along side the Parvati river and after an easy walk we reached Chhalal.

Few photographs from the start of our trek

As we progressed down the trek we were now feeling the heat and Hike started to become difficult

Trek to Rasol Continued..

As we started moving forward, the terrain was getting difficult. Along the way a strange thing happened, A Dog joined us and it accompanied us like a true companion up to Rasol and again came back with us. At some places that Dog even showed us the way when we were about to get lost in the unknown. It accompanied us like a true companion. One other starnge thing happened later which I will write later on but that was truly a miracle that happened with us.

9352-0  9354-1  9356-2  9358-3  9360-4  9362-5

With each next step we started to feel the heat and we started feeling very low on energy, we started to take frequent break, and then at around 25% of the trip completed, 2 of us decided not to move further and then we were reduced to 3, including the Dog, for further trek.
9364-6  9366-7  9368-8  9370-9

After parting ways and 2 going back the trek became very difficult and each step was an effort in itself
9372-10  9374-11  9376-12  9378-13  9380-14  9382-15  9384-16

At around 50% of the trek completed, we were very low on energy and were very exhausted and were feeling very thirsty. Even a smallest next step was a task in itself. We used to ask for water but every small little establishments were all empty with no body to listen to our misery at that time. Suddenly a strange thing happened when we were just sitting and with no option of either moving ahead or back a small boy of around 10-11 years age cam running and asked us our problem, he rushed back and from somewhere he got us one Chilled mineral water bottle. We jumped on that priceless water and while we were drinking that water, the boy just vanished, he didn't even take the money but from somewhere he came and saved our life. Totally a miracle in itself.

So, after regaining a bit of energy we continued our trek and after 5-6 hours of heavy trekking we finally started to see some villages with population really staying in those places.
