Best Travel Blog on Delhi to shimla bike trip in 2011
« on: August 27, 2014, 05:12:20 AM »
This road trip log, Motorcycle road trip Delhi to Shimla in 2011, is from my first bike trip ever into the mountains and I, along with my cousin, enjoyed this motorcycle ride from Delhi to Shimla, Kufri in Himachal Pradesh.

It all happened and fell into place when I had been planning to go on a bike trip for last 2 years at that time, but due to various reasons and a very busy life, and also sometimes simply due to lack of a companion to go with, I had to hold back the plan but finally Bike trip from Delhi to Shimla happened.
In the year 2010 my friend and I decided to go on a Bike trip, although it was very difficult task for me to convince him for a trip on ‘Bike’ but for him to convince his parents was something next to impossible. But as majority of the Biker's club do, we decided to tell his parents a lie that we would be going by a bus. As I am a part of glorious IT industry and therefore I easily get up to 4-5 days vacation because of a two day weekend. We planned to leave on Friday evening after office, and excitement was on peak when I was packing my bags on Thursday night. But as the fate of a plan is always ill fated, Suddenly my friend called me on my phone. I picked it thinking we’ll discuss the trip but.. Shatter..boom.. you remember the floods in Ambala. He said no to the trip. And then trip got doomed and I was there.. sitting with full bag packed, roaring to roll the wheels of my bike but nobody to go with. And then the Long wait started again.
Now after a year, in 2011, I again planned the trip on bike to Shimla with my cousin. We decided to take only one bike Pulsar 200. Now again I took Monday as a leave and we decided to go on Friday the 17th June’s evening. So Friday came I was in office wrapping up my work and till 1 p.m it was a nice sunny day..and then Boom Shatter again.. It started raining heavily and It rained till 6 p.m in Noida. So, Again the plan was on the verge of doom, but this time my companion was firm and we decided to leave on early Saturday morning and I slept at his place to wake up early to leave early at wee hours, like 5-6 in the morning and in the excitement we were late in sleeping and consequently we woke up late only at 7 in the morning. I looked outside and no sign of rain so all thumbs were up this time.
So at 8 in the morning the trip began, a journey which I will remember and cherish for rest of my life, started. At start I was on pillion seat and my cousin was riding the machine. We took a pic at start and there we go.
152-0

We Started from Rani Bagh (Pitampura) at Sharp 8 am and it took us exactly 20 odd minutes to reach Karnal bypass as traffic was bit heavy at Madhuban chowk. After Karnal bypass the road was smooth and we started cruising and in another thirty minutes or so we reached Murthal which is about 45 kms from our starting point and at the famous Sukhdev Dhaba in Murthal we took our first halt. We had nice and hot Aaloo paranthas(Stuffed potato breads) with lot of white butter on it and tea.
154-1

Now I forgot to do a little showoff, as I brought a new and expensive Samsung Galaxy S2 which had a wonderful camera and a GPS. So, we chose not bring a digital camera to take snaps. We took few pictures at Sukhdev dhaba, and again we were on the road, this time I was riding and my cousin settled himself on a pillion seat. My cousin’s height is 2 inches more than me, and hence he was not comfortable in carrying the bag on his back as the whole weight of the bag got transferred to his shoulders. While starting the journey , we tied a small pillow on the bike's rear end to transfer the weight of bag on pillow but that Idea worked for me only. Still we continued as we were fresh and we decided to take another halt at Karnal Haweli. In between we took some photographs.

That day weather was good with no rains to our joy and also there was no sign of sun. I was riding, the bike at that stretch, smoothly in between 90-100 kmph. The road was nice till we passed Panipat flyover. Panipat flyover is a big relief, because now people bypass the whole busy Panipat city. After Panipat there was continuous construction work happening. So the stretch was bit difficult to ride for another 60-70 kms. At that stretch we saw a group of royal enfield bikers. They were 20-25 in number and we passed them all one after another. After 120 kms appx. we reached Karnal Haveli. Now we were feeling a bit tired. We just had fresh lime Soda there and called up our homes to broadcast our well being.8324-0 164-1When we were at Karnal haveli, we heard from few that heavy rain was falling in Ambala, but still we chose to start again and when we reached Ambala there was water logged on the roads but no sign of rain. But as a precautionary measure we stopped and decided to wear our raincoats, now thanks to my S2's GPS we just managed to get on the right way to take a turn. It was 2:30-2:45 when we passed Zirakpur and took a turn under the flyover for Shimla. After that I was feeling very hungry and my cousin was riding at that time, I asked him to stop somewhere for lunch but once we entered Punchkula, flyovers started one after another and then there was no sign of dhaba and just after passing Punchkula we stopped at a tea stall. At that point we also did an arrangement for keeping the bag on something as now bag was starting to hurt my cousin’s shoulders. We took some egg trays and tied those on the rear of bike to increase the height of rear to keep the bag.166-2After the arrangement we were back on the road again and this time I was again on a riding seat. At main Pinjaur crossing a local Police constable stopped us. He asked for our Bike’s PUC, DL, RC, Insurance. So it is always advised to keep all four documents with you. Now after crossing Pinjaur we reached Kalka and a big traffic jam as if every body in the world using that road but since we were on Bike we didn’t lose much time there in jam. I wonder how a very narrow highway in Kalka which crosses through a market in Kalka is managing the entire traffic. We got first glimpse of Hills after crossing Kalka and we finally reached the devine place Dev Bhoomi Himachal Pradesh border. I don’t know how they divided the states and drew lines but Himachal Pradesh got all the hill area, because just after HP border hill riding starts. I suddenly started feel refreshed and started to enjoy riding in hills, all my tiredness was gone and I was riding with great pleasure. It was a dream coming true for me at that moment. I rode for another 30-35 kms in hills and then we stopped at McD. I don’t remember the exact name of that place. There we stopped for 45-50 minutes. We started again on those hills and it was a very pleasurable experience. We stopped in between at one or two points to take pictures as views were now getting very wonderful.168-3 8326-4 172-5 174-6At a Tea Stall named Shimla View in Kandaghat, we stopped for a Maggie break.176-7

At about 6:30-7 in the evening we were just 15 kms away from Shimla and then there we encountered huge traffic jam, what I said when I talked about the jam in Kalka that as if every body in the world has come to Shimla. Finally at 7:30-7:45 pm we reached Shimla, we crossed the main tunnel of Shimla and straight away started to hunt for a Hotel. I had been to Shimla twice before this trip and was a bit familiar with the tariff rates of Hotels. Near Bus Stand we asked to 2-3 people about hotels and availability but every body told us that every hotel in the city is full and then a funny thing happened, we asked some locals to help us find a room and they told us that  it would be very difficult to get a room and if by chance we get a room the price they mentioned was quite hilarious. They told us we could get a room in Shimla for about 15K a night.. yes yes you read it right 15K ... 15000 for a 'single' night.. hahaha and if we go ahead and go to a place called Sanjauli that is 6-7 kms from Shimla we could get a room for 5-6K. Now I decided to leave the bike and get on my feet to hunt for proper hotel by walking. We managed to visit 3-4hotels but they all were quoting quite a high price of 3-4k. Now by god’s grace we met a Taxi driver, he gave me some local guide’s(Sharma ji) number.Sharma Ji arranged a room for us for a very affordable price in a very decent hotel Pine View near tunnel in Shimla. Hotel manager was asking Rs1200 but I negotiated well to get the price down to Rs900. And finally we reached our room and as we were very tired we straightaway took the bed and got laid down for half an hour.

Next Morning we woke up and we were in no hurry at all, took all our time to get ready and checked out at 12. I knew the room we got was still a bit expensive and we could still get a cheaper room and wee started to hunt again and got another for Rs 500. After this we left for Kufri. It was a very nice journey up till Kufri.

After Coming back from Kufri we went to The Mall road and one thing which I love about Shimla is The Mall road. Being a Delhite I am very much used to a very good crowd but still in Shimla the crowd is great. Mall road and The Ridge is always a great place to spare the time. We had an Icecream there and then with nice dinner we ended our day.

On Monday we started the return journey. At 12 we started back from Shimla. Again the weather was very nice for MoBiking. We followed the same route by which we came. On the way near Dharampur I specially want to mention the Chole Kulche which we had there. They were awesome.

Once we left Zirakpur we noticed some noise coming from engine It was coming from Timing belt in the engine and thus we stopped at Bajaj center . They told us that engine oil is also very low, so we topped up the engine oil also. And we started again the boring journey in plains and we reached Karnal Haveli again. There we again noticed that the noise of timing belt has increased but still we decided to carry on and we continued at speed of 80 kmph and then near Sonipat a very great thing happened. The Clutch wire broke and now there was no service station opened at that time as it was 8 in the evening now. We decided to continue without Clutch..ahahaha. That was the stupidest thing we did. And after 30 kms of riding a bike without clutch, near Madhuban chowk which is 5 kms from our home the engine was off and it didn’t start again. So my cousin called his friend, He came on his scooter and with the support of his leg and scooter we covered last 5 kms of our journey. And at 10 pm in the night we finally reached our home from our maiden Bike trip.
