Roopkund and Junargali pass Himalayan trek
« on: October 18, 2014, 03:41:42 PM »

Find out about the new trek done by a Gotripper to Roopkund and Junargali pass and read about this Himalayan Trek

4688-0

Roopkund also known as mysterious lake
The base camp of this trek is lohajung…..it is in chamoli district of uttrakhand. This place heavily comes in picture during nanda raj jat yatra
Starting pt of nanda devi rajjat yatra is  nauti village near adibadri…for roopkund and beyond it the start point of this yatra is wan not lohajung
There r 2 routes for roopkund 1st from lohajung and other from wan.. but preferable one is lohajung..because d hike from wan is quite tough but in raj jat yatra they start from wan

We were planning for dis trek from last year..after so many yes no …finally d day came …in other words our departure day…..
After going through all d blogs written by trekkers across India n abroad too….(yes, its quite famous trek )….we planned accordingly  …initially we thought it iz 6 day trek from lohajung to lohajung ..because on all blogs minimum six day  itinerary  given ..with all halts mentioned ….but in d end we took only 3 dayz to complete this trek
During d planning period ..we thought we will arrange minimum 6 trekkers ..but later on  only 3 of us left for this trek…me  my brother n my photo freak room partner ….
Initial stage (shopping stage)
We were quite excited for dis trek…so lot of craze for shopping was in our mind….like rucksacks …different apparels for colorful clicks …
Hiccups for rucksacks …..we were confused at start about d capacity of rucksack…..but later we decided to go with 50 ltr..n in d end it came out more than enough ..so if u r planning for this trek then carry 50 ltr rucksack (lesson no. 1 )
Problems with too much apparels……there exist a problem in each one of us ….we want every click to be unique….different colors …but for this trek if u take more than 2 sweatshirts n 2 lowers n 1 dual side jacket…den rest will remain untouched because on high altitude with freezing pt temperature..u will never think about washing face …forget about wearing different outfits ..so carry minimum luggage (lesson no. 2 )

Second Stage (Departure Stage)
there r plenty of options to reach lohajung
Mr. shah take care of all transportation in lohajung…pick up an drop from haldwani/kathgodam to lohajang

If u r planning for this trek from delhi
Option 1 . Overnight journey in ranikhet express ..u will reach kathgodam early morning n then u can use pick up facility of mr shah (But it will impact your trek length….. will tell later )
Another option….we took dis
As we know newspaper delivery in hills iz not as easy as its in delhi….
Option no.2 Here 2-3 press vehicles take newspapers to different locations of uttrakhand….they start operating after 12 am …

D departure
As u all  know now only 3 trekkers left for this trip….me n my roomie works in rudrapur n my bro in delhi …we told him to book a seat in sampark kranti …it departs at 4 pm from delhi n arrives around 10 pm in haldwani..so our plan was simple ..he will meet us in haldwani at 10 pm n den after dinner we will catch press vehicle…but things were not as easy as we planned …sometimes we can’t trust on indian railways ..same thing happened that day ..train was late by 3 hrs …so our actual plan went wrong….my bro decided to switch actual plan and he ran towards anandvihar for roadways services…he boarded bus from anand vihar isbt at 5 pm….on an avg bus takes 8 hrs from delhi to haldwani ….but also road traffic matters ….somehow he reached haldwani at 12:30 am

There r 2 press cabs from haldwani to garur one at 12: 30 am n other at 2 am …we boarded first one …
He ran like knight rider n around 5:30 am we were at garur …within 5 min bageshwar- Dehradun bus came …n we boarded it till tharali …so by d time 7:30 am we were at tharali…from there we took a shared sumo till deval ..d road iz very damaged from tharali to deval because of landslides…around 8 we were at deval….
Here comes d real show of Mr. shah …..all d road transportation iz under him….he was dealing with all trekkers at same time….in way there iz a monopoly of mr. shah
He arranged a cab for us for lohajung ….meanwhile we had breakfast at deval  n purchased Gloves Raincoat and Monkey caps  …we reached lohajung around 10 am …..

4668-1

we tried to call mr.narendar but his no. was out of reach so we wasted around 4 hrs in lohajang just sitting …..in between all this we came across mr. dev singh …an experienced guide for this terrain ….he told us that his group iz on d way to didina …he will fix us with them…..for a moment we thought it’s a good idea ..atleast we can save a day …..(will tell later how many dayz we saved by not going with his group)
We were planning to go wid him but suddenly we got a call from narendar …after few min he came ….n said if we told him yesterday about our plan …all d things will be arranged by this time….so he told us he will arrange a guide ,porter n mulls n cooking utensils and we have to buy all ration …so we agreed …
He arranged harinder aka hari as a guide ….he was ready to go with us ..(he just came from bedni but still he was ready to come with us )….hari arranged all utensils n kerosene oil .. meanwhile narendar arranged 2 mulls n tent sleeping bags n mats ….we purchased all ration for 5 peoples for 5 dayz with help of hari

Start of trek
Narendar dropped us to kulling 2 km away from lohajung …another optional start pt of this trek ..
Mulls were coming from lohajung carrying all luggage ….
So we started our trek from kulling around 3 pm
Initially it’s a down trek till river …so quite easy for first 2 km.. ..after reaching river its around 4 km hike till didina(first home stay for this trek )…. It’s a dense forest trek with sound of river n our breathing sound only hearable till didina …we reached didina around 5 :30 pm …..this village iz widout power supply.. few houses there n a home stay of india hikes …we stayed there ….facilities r quite good ….d effect of tourism was visible in didina….washing rooms with English seats… they r providing good facilities in such a remote area…4-5 tents were also there  in case no. of trekkers r excess in no. ….we stayed in dis house ….

4670-2

we met dev singh group in didina ….they all  from Calcutta..this was their first trek….
Hari told us we will leave 7 in morning after taking breakfast with packed lunch…in night we discussed with hari n porter  about our next halt …..there were 2 options 1 was bedni n 2 was patharnachni …bedni was 12 km from didina n patharnachini was 20 km from didina ,,,it all depends upon our initial start…because from didina to ali bugyal its steep hike ……its like we have to trek from bottom to d peak of mountain to reach ali bugyal…..
We woke up at 6 in morning n had breakfast….. at 7:15 am we started our trek….from didina dere r 2 ways to reach ali bugyal first steep hike n other a rather easy but trek length increase by 2 km….it runs diagonally..but its preferred for mulls…. We took first one …..dev singh group n we started at same time from didina …..d hike till ali was quite difficult its very steep …..with few halts we reached finally at peak of this mountain at 9:30 am  ….whenever we looked behind for dev singh group.. no signs of them

4672-3

Finally after trekking around 5 km we reached starting pt of ali bugyal….from here tree lines disappeared…from now onwards there will be no trees only grassy lands n rough terrain n snow
After reaching d peak … only one word for d view ..mesmerizing ….grass lands all around n in d background  trishul nandaghunti peak …its simply amazing….its like a different world …only grass lands nothing else …..we stayed  for almost n hr.. clicked pics ….

4676-4

4678-5

Meanwhile our mulls n porter also came  …he was coming from different route d diagonal one ……
Now  just gentle walk of 7 km for bednibugyal ...at alibugyal we decided  to go for patharnachni…as dere was plenty of time left

4680-6

After trekking few more km on plain grass land…we took our packed lunch …..it was few boiled eggs  chappatis n pahadi fav alllo ke ghutke (dry cooked potatoes  )
After taking lunch we trekked for patharnachni …..we came across bednibugyal n bednikund ….d impact of nanda rajjat yatra was visible on bedni…grass land was damaged ..impact of large no. of peoples gathered  was visible ….a rough data gives an idea of no. of people  during rajjatyatra …its around 4 lakh on a particular day….hari told us on that day bedni was enlightened….it was looking nothing less then delhi…just imagine a grass land full of tents n lights all over …..

4682-7

One route was going for bedni …but as we decided d night halt at pathar nachni..we left that route n moved forward…from top india hikes tents were visible……d view of bedni n bednikund from top was amazing …..
From bedni  its around 5 km hike till ghoralotani..it was like a never ending hike

4684-8
…..after few hrs we somehow reached ghoralotani…..from there its just a downhill trek of around 3 km for patharnachni ……but before that we saw our next day hike …it was  visible  …at a distance a trek was appearing in front of our eyes….it’s like d trek was going for heaven…. A mixed feelings for next day…because it’s going to be tough ……we reached patharnachni around 2: 30 pm…. Not to mention no signs of devisingh group…..our mulls n porter was already there … he cooked Maggie n milk tea for us ….after trekking so much….what else we required then this….. few fiber huts n around 12 TTH (trek the Himalayas )tents …..we decided not to use our tent…here d positive impact of nanda rajjat yatra …. Before nanda devi  no water supply at patharnachni..but due to nanda devi rajjat yatra water supply iz provided at patharnachni….but after this point  not water supply..u have to carry water with u for further trek……
We stayed in TTH tent …another important thing….this iz last pt of mobile signals…n only Vodafone network available at this pt… n also it’s at a certain pt…….
We took dinner at 7 pm …. N slept in sleeping bags …..we planned for early morning movement around 4 am for roopkund….we planned to reach there at sunrise n return back to patharnachni…
As planned we woke up at 3 :30 am …had tea n packed lunch  along with hari we moved to roopkund ..we placed first step at 4 : 15 am …..trek was  little bit visible under moon light …..d most important thing about early morning trekking iz …nothing iz visible beyond few meters…so psychologically its best time….because some trekkers loose hope by seeing d peak…n hike of trek to cover by seeing it from distance …..
Its around 2.5 km hike till kaluvinayak temple….we reached there at 5 : 30 … n from there …its only snow …..now 3.5 km downhill trek to bhagwabusa we reached at 6 :15 …… some fiber tents n some TTH tents

4686-9
but everything on snow .. n above all no water supply at this pt.. we had Maggie ..n then we moved for our final trek its 3 km from bhagwabusa on snow  …initial 2.5 km little hike…but on snow

4688-10

…but d most difficult part of this trek yet to come …its last 500m hike …its very tough

4690-11

….because d air iz very thin….snow ..n steep hike d most difficult one on this trek….we took almost 45 min for last 500 m …n finally we reached our destination … ROOPKUND our ultimate destination…for which we waited for years … n now we r in front of it ….amazing feeling…after so much trekking we reached finally …..

4692-12

4694-13

4696-14

4700-15

U all know roopkund iz also known as skeleton lake when we reached there we saw skeletons placed one over other….there iz also a small temple  …n from there 100 m down …roopkund ….in this season u can move over it because water level iz low..but during may june plenty of water….some skeleton were also visible there ..but most of them submerged under snow….
If u see this valley …u will get an idea about dis valley…it’s a closed one from 3 sides …an opening from front only..On left side mountain landslide visible... On d back side broken glacier n right side snow carrying route for junargali pass … if someone fells from any one d side …he will directly go into roopkund..We often use a household appliance known a kadai  for cooking food…roopkund iz same to it ….. d base of kadai iz like a roopkund

After taking packed lunch…we decided to trek further till junargali pass ….it’s a high altitude pass...It was quite slippery because till dis time snow started melting..we decided to trek it as early as possible …we reached at junargali pass within few mins it’s 400 m hike but on slippery snow….
But in d end its worth to take this risk…at d peak...Everything iz below u…u r standing in front of trishul peak.. u can even see its base pt.. its like u can touch it… d best feeling I ever come across ..its like we r  standing on heaven…from there stairs for sheelasamundar..These stairs r also a positive impact of nanda raj jatyatra...Earlier to this yatra...There were no stairs … from there few meters ahead homekund ..d final destination of nandarajjatyatra …we stayed there for few minutes n then decided to trek down… we took few snaps there ..n now we started moving down to patharnachni… we left roopkund around 11:30 am

4702-16

We r lucky…because there was no fog that day…every peak was so clear n visible …but during our return trek…clouds started  covering d valley…n within few minutes clouds all over…. We reached bhagwabusa at 12 : 30 pm…but due to shortage of milk powder n some basic ingredients there  we decided to keep on trekking ….d supply was yet to come there ….we reached kaluvinayak temple at 1:30 pm. … hari told us he will meet us in patharnachni…with lunch arrangements…it was quite easy for him to trek down early …we took our time n reached patharnachni at 2:30 pm… he was ready with khichdiii… we ate it…n it was simply wow….
There after 1 day we met dev singh group ….d funny thing we started at same time...Same date from didina n we completed roopkund n they yet to do it ……dey told us that they stayed in bedni…
D climate was getting worse…fog all over….we took dinner at 8 pm… n in search of network when we came out of tent..Its freezing out there...Just think about trekkers who were staying in bhagwabusa surrounded by snow…..
We planned next morning downhill trek will be up to wan …in morning d story was same...we n dev singh group started at same time at 8 am …..but little bit different ..We were trekking down for home n they for bhagwabusa …there was fog all around….we took breakfast in patharnachni  n started our return journey….
D funny thing we never opened our tents in this trek (lesson 3. don’t try be smart carry your tents because u never know what will happen up there)
We reached bedni at 10 am …its covered with fog….hari coming with mulls n porter met us there…we decided  to move as early as possible because it started raining ….

4704-17

D trek from bedni iz all down till wan village ….it’s very tough if u r coming to roopkund from wan…because it’s all hike of 12 km till  bedni from wan…so better to opt didina route for  hike to roopkund n use wan route for return trek…

4706-18
In our return trek we met india hikes group of college students, there condition was vey down…because it’s a really tough trek form wan to bedni...with an optional  halt pt…gharoli patal …they must stayed there
So always prefer lohajung didina route for d hike …with a plus pt of alibugyal on this way…u will miss alibugyal if u trek from wan
We reached wan at 1  pm… still raining..narendar came there to pick us… he took us to a resort at 2 km away from lohajung…it was away from city… but really decent one ….we had our packed lunch n Maggie ,,,the resort owner anni arranged chicken from deval..yes deval…..because chicken iz not available in lohajung….
Hari enquired (off course to mr shah )about next morning bus for deval but due to rain it didn’t came up…..so we decided for a shared cab till deval n from their shared cab till haldwani….
We boarded shared cab at 6 in morning till deval n from their shared cab till haldwani ..we reached haldwani at  3 pm …my bro took a bus to delhi n we to rudrapur…but still wondering .. I m here in rudrapur writing this blog…but devsingh group might be still in those hills struggling in snow n rain
It all depends on us how we do this trek..Dev sigh was an experienced guide...if u r doing trek with him he will surely take u till d end …roopkund…n he will take care of your throughout d trek but in d end it all depends on your fitness level…how much dayz u take…we with  hari did this trek in 3 days.
Now at start of our trek if we opted for early morning cab facility by Mr. Shah from haldwani to deval… den 1 day was lost in journey to deval…but we did this journey overnight in press vehicle

U can surely do this trek with india hikes or TTH but in d end they also take local help..so y not contact direct with local guides ???
People like hari ..narendar r very good enough for this trek…but they lack due to no marketing ..i will always prefer to trek with  these peoples what about u all???
Y not give them chance …y not trek with them… d people of uttrakhand r simple n true from heart…n its worth doing this trek with likes of hari ..narendar …sometimes we run behind presentation …dese sites r showing lots of facilities up there …but on ground level….everything iz same ..Either u go with them or dev singh or hari..it all depends on u… so y not prefer local guides directly

D most important thing on this trek iz health…
People suffering from asthma or any kind of breathing problem..pls don’t even think of going there …because air iz very thin up there  after patharnachni  its really tough….(lesson 4 )
Opt for some less distance trek before going on this trek…its around 76 km trek on high altitude ..so don’t try acting like hero,,..first go on less length treks (lesson 5 )
Learn from all d lessons I mentioned up ..n keep trekking… nature iz beyond our imagination…it can be cruel at times but just keep on trekking …n don’t pollute Himalayas

Many treks yet to come…I hope some of u will be with us so that we can tell stories together…

during our trek we realized there was no need to carry tents, if your guide iz well known by other guides on this trek,he will fit u in tents available in all halts  but to avoid any problems you must carry them, because during peak season these tents are booked by tth and india hikes. In didina there iz home stay facility by india hikes, n pathar nachini too fibre huts and tents available by TTH (trek the himalayas)...our halts were only at these location so we never used our tents...in bedni also tents available same for bhagwabasa ..but we carried our tents all d way on mulls..in d end we paid for the facility we never used, but it's always gud on these long trek to be on safe side
