Spiti Valley circuit has two major gateways, one from Shimla side and other one is from Manali side. If you want to go on a roadtrip to Spiti Valley then the most popular route to Spiti Valley is from Shimla side and this should be the route you should take and start your road trip to Spiti Valley from Shimla Side. But there are quite a few, who start the trip from Manali side.

There are some advantages of visiting Spiti Valley from Manali Side:

1. Less time to reach Chandertaal or Kaza: Most people visit Spiti Valley to do camping at Chandertal Lake or to explore around Kaza. From Manali side you can reach Chandertal in a day time.

2. Crossing High Passes of Rohtang La and Kunzum La: If you want to cut the crap and want to cross those passes asap, then Manali side for visiting Spiti Valley should be your choice

3. Toughest Road on the route to be crossed at the earliest: Arguably the toughest route to cross between Gramphu to Batal comes on Day 1 if you start from Manali side and then on rest of the circuit, you will find bad roads but the toughest one will be passed on day 1.

4. Route to the valley from Manali side is tough but lesser prone to Landslides than from Shimla side

So, these are few reasons why some people choose Manali as a starting point for Spiti Valley road trip but still Shimla side should be route to take if there is not a very important reason to start from Manali side.
